On a small dining table, Christmas decor has to share space with plates, glasses and serving dishes. A big centerpiece looks great in a photo and ends up on the floor the moment dinner is served.
Decorate in layers that can shrink: a runner and low pieces that stay, and taller things that move to a sideboard when the food comes out. Below are ten ideas that work on a table for four.
Before you decorate
- Measure the table. On a 36-inch-wide table, the center strip free for decor is about 10 inches once plates are down.
- Keep it low. Anything taller than about 12 inches blocks faces across the table.
- Pick two colors and one metal. Red and green with gold, or white and green with silver, looks planned.
- Plan where the food goes. If you serve family style, the centerpiece must be easy to lift off.
01A table runner
A runner is the base for everything else and protects the table from candle wax. On a small table, a narrow one (13 or 14 inches) leaves room for plates.
02A low centerpiece
A long, low arrangement of greenery, pine cones and a few ornaments works better than a tall vase. Artificial garland keeps its shape for the whole season and does not drop needles into the food.
03Poinsettias
Poinsettias are the classic Christmas plant and bring color without much effort, like in the photo. On the table, use small ones or artificial stems; a big pot takes up a whole place setting.
04Candles
Two or three candles in the middle give the table its glow. Taper candles look elegant; use flameless ones if kids or pets are around or the centerpiece has dry greenery.
05Christmas placemats or chargers
Placemats or charger plates define each seat and make even everyday plates look festive. Gold or woven chargers go with any dishes you already have.
06Cloth napkins with rings
Cloth napkins in red or plaid, rolled in simple rings, are an easy upgrade. Add a sprig of rosemary or a small ornament as a place card.
07Fairy lights in the centerpiece
A battery string of tiny lights woven through the garland adds sparkle without heat. Our Christmas string lights ideas show more ways to use them.
08A small tree as the centerpiece
On a round table, a 12-inch tree with lights in the middle is a whole decoration on its own. Put it on a tray so you can lift it off before serving.
09Festive glasses and a tray
A set of holiday glasses or a wine carafe on a tray makes the drinks part of the decor. Choose glasses you will also use on New Year's Eve.
10A tablecloth for a bigger meal
For Christmas dinner itself, a tablecloth makes even a mismatched table look complete. Measure the table and add 12 inches on each side for the drop.
A plan by time
- Ten minutes: runner, candles and napkins.
- An hour: add the centerpiece, lights and poinsettias.
- For the big dinner: add the tablecloth, chargers and festive glasses.
Before you pay
- Check the length of the runner against the table; it should hang 6 to 12 inches over each end or stop just short of them.
- Keep the centerpiece below eye level.
- Use flameless candles near greenery and paper.
- Store the runner, napkins and centerpiece together in one box; our small apartment Christmas ideas explain how to keep holiday storage small.
