How the calculator works
A table fits when the chairs around it still work. The calculator keeps a clear strip between the table edge and every wall, railing or step, then picks the largest standard table that fits inside.
- 36 inches of clearance lets someone pull a chair out and lets another person walk behind. Use this whenever the table stands on a route to the door or the grill.
- 30 inches is enough to sit down and get up, but nobody passes behind a seated person. It works on the side of the table that faces a wall.
- 24 inches of table edge per person gives the number of seats.
Standard outdoor table sizes
- 24 to 30 in round or square: 2 seats
- 36 to 48 in round, or 48 x 30 in: 4 seats
- 54 to 60 in round, or 60 to 72 in long: 6 seats
- 72 in round, or 84 to 96 in long: 8 seats
- 120 in long: 10 seats
Round or rectangular
A round table seats more people for its footprint and has no corners to walk around, so it suits a square patio. A rectangular table suits a long, narrow one and stands closer to a wall.
If nothing fits
