Lighted medicine cabinets at Simple Project

The rules the calculator uses

  • Width. A mirror should be 2 to 4 inches narrower than the vanity, and never wider. The calculator picks the widest standard mirror that fits.
  • Two sinks. Each sink gets its own mirror, centered on the bowl, with a gap between them. One wide mirror across the whole vanity is the other option and makes a small bathroom look larger.
  • Lights at the sides. Each light needs about 8 inches of wall, so the mirror has to be narrower.
  • Hanging height. The bottom edge sits about 7 inches above the countertop, clear of the faucet and of splashes.
  • Mirror height. Up to 36 inches. With a light above, the top edge stays at 72 inches from the floor or lower, to leave room for the fixture. The top edge should be above the eye level of the tallest person in the house.

Where the lights go

  • At the sides, at eye level, 60 to 66 inches from the floor. This lights the face evenly and is the best choice for shaving and makeup.
  • Above the mirror, 75 to 80 inches from the floor, with a fixture about three quarters of the mirror width. This is the only option when the mirror fills the wall.
  • In the mirror. A lighted mirror or medicine cabinet needs no separate fixture, only a power supply behind it.

Mirror or medicine cabinet

A medicine cabinet the same size as the mirror adds storage for everything that otherwise stands on the counter. A surface-mounted one sticks out about 5 inches; a recessed one sits flush but needs a wall cavity free of pipes.

Standard mirror widths

16, 20, 22, 24, 28, 30, 36, 40, 48, 60 and 72 inches.

To choose the vanity itself, use the bathroom vanity size calculator. A bigger mirror is also idea number two in small bathroom ideas on a budget.
