How to measure the sofa

  • Length: arm to arm at the widest point.
  • Depth: front edge to the back at the deepest point.
  • Height: floor to the top of the back. If the legs unscrew, measure without them.
  • Diagonal depth (optional): hold a straight edge from the top of the back to the front of the arm. Then measure from that edge to the bottom back corner of the sofa. This number is often several inches less than the depth, and it is what lets a sofa pass on the tilt.

How to measure the door

Measure the clear opening, not the door itself: from the door stop on one side to the edge of the open door on the other. Taking the door off its hinges adds about an inch and a half.

How the calculator decides

  • The door. The slimmest side of the sofa, which is its depth, its height or its diagonal depth, has to be less than the width of the opening.
  • A straight run. If you can walk straight at the door, that is the only test.
  • A turn from a hallway. Carried level, the sofa has to swing into the opening while its tail is still in the hallway. The calculator works out the longest sofa of your thickness that can do that. In a normal hallway this is short, which is why movers rarely carry a sofa in level.
  • On end. A sofa shorter than the door is high goes through upright, like a fridge, as long as the hallway is wider than the sofa is deep. This is how most sofas get into apartments.

The result is cautious on purpose. Movers get sofas through gaps the math says are too small, by hooking one arm round the frame. Treat "tight fit" as "measure again".

Check the whole route

The front door is rarely the hardest part. Measure the elevator door and its depth, each stair landing and any low ceiling on the stairs.

If it does not fit

Pick an apartment-size sofa under 80 inches long and 34 inches deep, a loveseat with a chair, or a modular sofa that arrives in boxes. All three are in small living room furniture ideas.
