The bedroom is the one room where Christmas decor should make you slow down, not add more to look at. In a small bedroom there is also very little floor and surface to spare, so the best ideas are soft, low and easy to put away.
Think in textiles and light: bedding, pillows, a throw, a string of warm lights and one wreath. Leave the nightstands and the floor around the bed alone.
Before you decorate
- Keep the walkway. Leave the path from the door to the bed and to the closet clear.
- Choose warm white light. Cool white keeps you awake; warm white helps you wind down.
- Use battery lights with a timer. No cord runs to the bed and the lights switch off on their own.
- Keep candles flameless. LED candles give the same glow with no risk near bedding and curtains.
01Christmas bedding
A new duvet cover is the biggest change for the least effort. A red plaid, a soft green or a white knit cover makes the whole room feel seasonal, and it folds flat for storage in January.
02Seasonal pillow covers
Two pillow covers change the look of the bed in one minute. Covers take almost no room to store, unlike full pillows.
03A throw at the foot of the bed
A chunky knit or faux fur throw folded across the foot of the bed adds texture and gives you something warm to reach for.
04Fairy lights above the headboard
A short battery string above or around the headboard gives a soft glow, like in the photo. Fix it with clear adhesive clips so the paint stays clean.
05A wreath on the wall
One wreath above the bed or on the wall beside the window is enough. A battery wreath with lights glows without a cord. Hang it with a removable hook.
06A mini tree on the dresser
A tabletop tree on the dresser or a shelf takes the footprint of a book. A white or flocked tree feels calm in a bedroom.
07Flameless candles on a tray
A small tray with two or three LED candles and a sprig of greenery makes a tidy bedside scene. The tray keeps it from spreading over the whole nightstand.
08A garland on the window or the mirror
A short garland draped over the mirror frame or the curtain rod adds green without taking any surface. Our Christmas window decorations have more ways to dress the glass.
09Scented sleep spray or a diffuser
Scent is part of the mood. A pine or cinnamon room spray, or a small diffuser with a timer, does the work of ten small decorations.
10A Christmas stocking on the bedpost
A stocking hung from a bedpost or a hook on the wall by the door is a nice morning surprise for a partner or a child. See our mantel and stocking ideas for hanging options without a fireplace.
A plan by time
- Ten minutes: pillow covers and a throw.
- An hour: add the duvet cover, fairy lights and a wreath.
- A weekend: add a mini tree, candles on a tray and a window garland.
Before you pay
- Check the duvet cover size against your mattress, not only the bed name.
- Pick lights with a timer and batteries you can replace easily.
- Keep the nightstand half empty so there is room for a glass of water and a phone.
- If the bedroom is short on storage in general, our small bedroom storage ideas and small bedroom furniture ideas show what to fix first. For the rest of the home, see our small apartment Christmas decorating ideas.
